EDITOR'S CHOICE
E
ach year, I can't wait to see the collection of beautiful, fun, and inspiring submissions we get as part of our amateur photo contest. And each year, I'm surprised by the winners. Not because I disagree with any of them but because every judge comes to the table with his or her own distinct point of view and idea of what makes an image prize-worthy. This year, our judges consisted of me, Rachel Bartels of River City Outdoors, Anthony Beasley of Outdoor Afro, Matt Green of Big Muddy Adventures, and Steve Schmidt of Terrain . None of us are professional photojournalists, but we all appreciate that a good picture captures a genuine sense of place, personality, or activity - sometimes two or three of these things. For example, I absolutely love the feeling of amusement conveyed by our grand-prize winner (see page 32). I won't spoil it for you, but the photo may remind you of a certain beer company's famous marketing campaign. I also like the austere, almost mysterious splendor captured in our cover photo, a contest submission from Drew Flanakin. If there was one image that didn't make the cut that I could raise up as an editor's choice, it would be the one at the top of this page, "Snowy Sunset at Pickle Springs" by photographer Glenn Zimmerman. The tree branch tangles, the blue and yellowish sky, the contrast of snow and shadow in the bluffs - I want to be transported there. If you'd like to enter our photo contest next year, start collecting images now and keep an eye out for our announcement next summer. Not sure if your pictures have what it takes? Read "The Art of Taking Share-Worthy Outdoor Photos" by our uber-talented contributing photographer Dennis Coello. You can find it on our website at terrain-mag .com/the-art-of-taking-outdoor-photos/. It's packed with tips on how to transform your snapshot from simple to award-winning. I look forward to seeing what you submit next year. Get outside and take a different angle on their adventures! Brad Kovach Editor/Publisher
