PAST TO PRESENT
I
n this issue, starting on page 38, we have what I think is a fascinating story on the rediscovery" of four granite markers erected some 100 years ago by the St. Louis Cycling Club. I won't spoil the subject matter for you, but I will tell you that the article pushes a couple of buttons for me. First, it explores the amazing, enduring history of our fine city, which I always enjoy learning about - especially as it relates to outdoor recreation. Second, it walks that history forward and demonstrates how, with a little hard work and ingenuity, we can take an overlooked relic (or four) and transform it into an active, vital, community asset. Who knows? Maybe we'll see a Tour de Markers develop out of the renewed interest in the old cycling club monuments. I sure hope so. Along similar lines, I recently took part in a stakeholders meeting convened by Great Rivers Greenway to discuss the revitalization of the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge site on Riverview Drive, where the original Route 66 crossed from Illinois into Missouri. The 21- acre property is currently isolated and underused, with limited facilities to attract visitors. What should be a grand landmark is right now a missed opportunity. But the hard work and ingenuity have begun. Our first stakeholders meeting discussed physical site improvements, interest areas (history, culture, and natural resources), public safety solutions, and potential events that could be held on location. Just imagine how secure parking, trail access, bike and kayak rentals, and experiential programming could transform what is already a National Register of Historic Places bridge into a welcoming, exciting outdoor recreation venue for St. Louis. We'll keep you informed on how the project goes. In the meantime, we'd love to hear your thoughts on all of the above. Send me an email at brad@terrain-mag.com. Hope to hear from you!
